I have to admit, my love for sports games died with NHL94 but there have been some recent ones that I’ve had fun with (Tape to Tape is a super goofy roguelike take on hockey). The turn-based ones add more brains (at least for me) than the button mashing I tend to do with those sports games!!
I think you hit on it though...it has to be fun, which I guess is equal parts story and mechanics. If the mechanics frustrate me...or if it isn't fun to get through the story...I'll stop before the story ends.
Thanks for the mention. 💚 it’s been a huge year for games and my personal gaming journey and it was fun to read what sort of trends you have been seeing. I must admit that the genre salad has been confusing to try and find the right sort of game for me to spend my money on. But it’s also been fun to experiment by just playing different types of games and interpretations of genres. I’ve definitely googled “rogue lite “ “metroidvania” etc a lot this year 😆
It seems like everyone is thinking about how games will be made entirely with AI. But I think you bring up a good point. Let's use AI as a tool instead of a full replacement. Let's enhance games with it to add immersion. I loved your example with a game like Ace Attorney.
At first, when we didn’t understand an LLM’s capabilities, I think society collectively went to where the movies go, which is robot overlords. The reality is very different, and as I understand the limitations, I can see where it might make sense to harness the power of an AI.
Nice article with some really cool tips for games. I don't care much for sports games, but Soccer Kids looks fun!
Thanks James!

I think I go in for the story, and avoid mechanics...
But I kinda like a well designed game, and stay for the fun, mostly, until the story ends ;-)

For turn based fighting games there's YOMI Hustle and Mega Knockdown.
I knew someone would fill in the gaps that I was missing! Thanks William!

Any time!
It’s been fun to read your thoughts on the games that you play — I’m hoping for more thoughts and writing from you in the future!
And yeah…roguelite has definitely featured heavily in the games I played too.

Thanks so much for your lovely words!

Humans HAVE to be in the loop!
