I used to play turn-based games growing up. I still have my copy of Gladius for PS2. Dead Season looks very intense and I will keep an eye on it. Though, XCOM made me a little bit anxious about turn-based games like that. I always think about getting back into turn-based games.
I agree with you XCOM is not the most accessible turn-based game. I grew to love it because I started playing at a time in life where my play time was very fragmented. I appreciated the fact that I could take a turn and then come back to it hours later.
I think the three listed here are more accessible than XCOM though (based on what I've read and know about the franchises or games)!

Romancing SaGa 2 has me quite interested as someone who didn't know about the original.
