So interesting that biomarkers can be used to track gaming disorder. It’s about time this condition had some science behind it! Great read.

I do hope that the stigma related with addiction disorders, including gaming disorder, starts to go away with findings like this.

It’s not just a willpower thing — there may be physical/biological changes that we have very little control over.

I find that if I play a game for too long, I start becoming very tired mentally. However, I can remember very long play sessions where the sensation was more dreamlike and even drowsy, which matches those theta and delta states. So, basically, people with a gaming disorder also don't burn out as easily on a game? I wonder if the type of game influences this?

The type of game (if I remember reading correctly) influences gaming disorder, as the specific game or game type needs to feed into a person’s reward system (i.e., make them feel good for playing it).

But on top of that, the brain wave patterns and the parts of the brain that get activated makes a person with gaming disorder unable to stop when they need/want to stop.

I’m just not sure whether they DO burn out but can’t stop because their bodies don’t allow it, or whether they really don’t burnout as easily (if that distinction makes sense).

You’re right in that gaming disorder is much like other addiction disorders.

And there are certainly people who don’t believe they have an addiction to gaming.

But I also think there are some people who KNOW it is a problem but their bodies will not allow them to quit it. It goes way beyond a question of willpower when addictions take partial control of your body (dependence).

Addictions, like many other conditions, are a lot more nuanced than they seem.

No, they aren't. Everyone knows u have a problem except u, thus the need for interventions. Alcohol & other drugs are the most obvious, but work, food, sex, etc. Anything can be taken to an unhealthy extreme that is self-destructive.

The most common addictives are pleasurable. They relieve a pain, but they can become the source of pain when their effect was a problem avoidance measure.

Everything has a purpose, a designed function: emotional, physical, or spiritual. Once used past that function, it becomes problematic. Using a physical thing for emotional problems is never going to work. Using emotional things for spiritual problems won't work.

Match the problem w the solution.
