Very interesting! I do have my doubts, though. Gamification makes sense for learning rote information. But the 'level up' mindset is contrary to 'mastery', which often requires repeating the same effort over and over across a plateau with no obvious near-term improvement - aka, learning to love the journey, not the destination. I've found that to embrace a mastery mindset, I've had to let go of habits I learned from years of playing games.
1000% agree on appropriate use of games in education! I’d be curious to know what the long-term effects of gamified learning is. It’s part of the reason why I’m doubting my “progress” in Duolingo…am I just playing a game, getting experience points and earning badges? Or am I actually learning the language? I’m 600+ days in and though I can complete the exercises, I’m not sure I’d consider myself able to speak or maybe even understand Spanish any more than when I started.
Fun Fact: This War Of Mine is a school lecture in Poland.
I’m trying to balance the cool factor of this with the fact that it is war-related…it’s a tough one to swallow.
Well, it is in high schools. And World War 2 is a common topic in both literature and local history here :D
