Coming Soon is a forward-looking series about new turn-based games, released monthly. It also coincides with my favourite day of the week: #TurnBasedThursdays, a weekly community list of game devs showcasing their turn-based games. Give them a follow on BlueSky and keep up-to-date on new turn-based games alongside my LFG: Learning from Games and Science Shorts series!
👋🏼Hello JOMT Reader!
I’ve been watching some of my favourite YouTubers play an upcoming turn-based game called MENACE, desperately hoping for my turn to play the game. It’s a much-needed injection of new ideas and mechanics that I think the genre needed. There is much more focus on tactics, like suppressing enemy units before moving in close. It’s not something that was implemented well in other iconic games of the genre. And this is just information from the demo — there’s a whole space-based strategic layer that I’m excited to see how it ties into the ground combat.
Conquer Lands

📅 Release date: October 25, 2025
🖥️ Developer: Virtual Fable
📢 Publisher: Virtual Fable
🕹️ Platform: PC (Steam)
🎮️ The game
A medieval double deck-building game.
🎯 Who it’s for
You love medieval-style artwork
You appreciate fast-paced gameplay
‼️ What I’m excited about
Most deck-building games push you through a branching path with enemies of increasing difficulty, ending in a big boss fight at the end. The exciting thing about Conquer Lands is that it creates a story and gives you a choice about those branching paths. At the start of the game, you pick a land to start your conquest. Once you finish the branching path for that land, you pick another land on your way to world domination.
For me, giving the deckbuilding mechanic some purpose and choice makes each individual battle more meaningful and immersive.
The double decker mechanic (one for the actions and one for your army) will also provide some deep strategies for how you manage and use those decks beyond luck of the draw. If you’re a fan of deeply strategic deck-building games, make sure to check out this game.
Pipkin

📅 Release date: October 27, 2025
🖥️ Developer: Gregdude
📢 Publisher: Gregdude
🕹️ Platform: PC (Steam)
🎮️ The game
A Halloween-themed creature collecting adventure.
🎯 Who it’s for
You love Pokemon and other creature collector games
You’re in love with Gameboy-style graphics
‼️ What I’m excited about
Just in time for Halloween, and short enough to be able to finish it before then, Pipkin is a no-nonsense take on creature collector games. You’ll create your own character and battle creatures as you add creature you like to your team. I’m not a completionist by any definition, but always appreciate the option to collect interesting creatures.
Pipkin is a game that will respect your time but still allow you to scratch that creature collecting itch.
The First Mine

🕹️ Platform: PC (Steam)
🎮️ The game
A tile-laying puzzle game
🎯 Who it’s for
You love Dorfromantik
You like thinking about how different map elements synergize
‼️ What I’m excited about
On days I just want a cozy turn-based game away from aliens, weapons, and injuries, I turn to games like The First Mine. You place tiles around a central gold mine, scoring points and extracting more gold for grouping certain tiles together. But it’s not an endless tile-placing exercise: you have a limited number of turns to complete objectives, giving the game a sense of urgency.
That urgency isn’t a bad thing — it gives you a definite start and end to your runs so you won’t forget what you were planning to do. The full game will include different lengths of games as well as character selection that affect how you score, adding to its replay value. I always like to keep a cozier turn-based game in my back pocket and The First Mine looks like it’ll be a good one!
